Built-ins & Storage

Mudrooms, pantries, wine storage, floating shelves, and architectural storage solutions.

Built-in storage turns awkward corners, long hall walls, and under-stair volumes into usable space. Koala Construction designs and installs mudroom lockers, pantry cabinets, linen closets, bench seating with cubbies, entertainment centers, and architectural shelving across Greater Austin and the Hill Country — built in our shop, installed to fit the actual wall, not a nominal dimension from a plan set.

Storage built-ins sit at the intersection of cabinet craft and room design. They need to align with baseboard heights, door casings, and ceiling transitions while still holding real weight — coats, pantry goods, media equipment, or wine. We specify box thickness, shelf spans, and hardware rated for daily use so sagging shelves do not show up two seasons later.

Common built-in applications

Mudrooms and entry sequences benefit from locker height tailored to your family — bench storage below, hooks or open cubbies above, and closed cabinets for seasonal gear. Pantries gain pull-out trays, adjustable shelves, and tall spaces for small appliances when a standard wire rack is not enough. Living areas use built-ins to frame fireplaces, flank windows, or hide HVAC grilles without sacrificing storage depth.

Many built-in projects relate directly to custom cabinetry and closet systems elsewhere in the home. Quoting storage rooms together keeps wood species, paint sheen, and hardware consistent. Kitchen-adjacent pantries often tie into a broader kitchen install when openings, fillers, and crown details must match the main run.

Load, access, and daily function

Good storage design starts with what you reach for every week — not just what looks clean in a rendering. We ask about backpack drops, dog leashes, bulk pantry buys, and media components that need ventilation. Adjustable shelf pins, full-extension drawers, and soft-close hinges are standard considerations, not upgrades buried in fine print.

Built-ins in circulation paths must respect door swings, stair clearances, and sight lines from adjacent rooms. We template those constraints on site before shop drawings are finalized, especially in older Hill Country homes where floors and walls vary more than new construction.

Planning your project

We start with how you use the space today and what fails — not enough hook length, dead corners, or shelves that cannot hold a grocery bag. Photos and rough dimensions are enough for an initial conversation; site measure confirms scribe lines, outlet locations, and floor level changes before build begins.

Finish carpentry around built-ins — base cap, crown return, or trim transitions — can be included in scope so the unit looks original to the house, not furniture pushed against a wall.
